  • Chelidonia reception on main street is in the topmost building on this photograph The first few terraces below the round arch also belong to our ensemble. From here it is a two minutes' walk to central town square with Oia's main church "Agia Panagia", the Holy Virgin. Everything else from bus and taxi station, cash machines, restaurants, [somewhat mini] super markets, newspaper stands, to art galleries and bars is nearby. As all of Chelidonia villas the computer networking room points to the caldera and sports a tiny terrace as well. While checking your e-mail or sending photographs to friends you will always be tempted to turn your eyes from the computer screen to this panorama.

Main street along Chelidonia bay around 1900 when Oia could boast of 5000 inhabitants and a fleet of 165 cargo vessels. Right from the middle of the photo there is the arch of Chelidonia reception. The more illustrious houses around collapsed during the earthquake in 1956, some were never rebuilt. The flat roofed palazzi of the rich in genereal took severe damage, whilst the cave dwellings of the average sailor withstood.

Today's Oia is populated by 700 plus inhabitants, the town has been growing again steadily during the past three decades. More and more descendants of those families who had left Santorini after the earthquake have returned. They were joined by three dozen swallows from the north who have settled in the caves of traditionally cosmopolitan 0ia. They are Americans, Austrians, British, French, German, Polish and a few other nations.

Oia offers more than the usual main stream souvenir shops. There are fine art galleries around, an excellent international bookshop, a local icon painter' s studio, a traditional winery offering degustations, and a small but highly interesting nautical museum. The one and only location which is a must at sunset is down in Ammoudi, Oia's western harbour where fresh fish is delivered to this pier a few times every day.
